RECTOR CONDEMNS SOCIETAL STIGMATIZATION OF SKILL AQUISITION
The Rector of Federal Polytechnic Daura Katsina Prof. Aliyu Mamman has cautioned Nigerians against the low esteem attached to the acquisition of skills in the country. Speaking in an interview in Abuja, he stated that Nigerians need to get rid of the mindset that acquisition of skills is only for the unserious, poor and downtrodden members of the society. He maintained that the negative mindset is a major challenge in skills training and a setback to national development. In his words, "Attitudinal change and creation of awareness are necessary to encourage people into skill acquisition training and activities. In developed countries like Germany people with skills are more paid than those in white collar employment, so also is China, Japan, the wrong mindset among Nigerians is due to ignorance and must be stopped. He stressed that "if we must be like the advanced countries of the world skills acquisition awareness should be valued and promoted not only by government agencies with the responsibility but by communities, parents and all the stakeholders in the academia, industries, other private and public organisations" He urged parents to encourage their children in acquisition of skills to get them equipped in it together with their certificates instead of paying money for them to acquire paper qualifications and be jobless awaiting the jobs that are limited and unavailable.
