The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, APWEN, held its 2022 annual conference and meeting in abuja, the week long conference with the theme "Just energy transition: An enabler for sustainable development in Nigeria" covered series of programmes: exhibitions, lectures and presentations of awards to outstanding personalities.
Speaking at the event, the president of the association, Engr. Dr. Elizabeth Eterigho , FNSE, FNSCHE, decried that Nigeria is a mono economy which relies on fossil fuel for survival while other countries are leveraging on renewable energy as a means of economy sustainability.
She stated that the only hydrocarbon energy available in the country is not enough for economic sustainability, noting that a local woman operating tomatoes grinding machine does not have power to operate such machine, and the same time, such woman would not be able to afford solar power.
"This is an opportunity for our government to invest in renewable energy, we have the local materials, our waste can be turned to usable energy, and this the time to research on this, time to start a transition process of renewable energy" she said.
Also speaking in an interview, a member of APWEN, Engr Dr Gina Ihekwere, maintained that the theme of this year conference which centers on energy transition for sustainable development, has a take home message on the challenges confronting the energy sector in Nigeria and the possible solutions to it.
She noted that one of the panelists urged the engineers to quit politicking and maximize professionalism by profilling solutions to the challenges facing the country's economy.
She urged young engineers to strive to do better and engage in researches that will change the face of the economy.
