The presidential candidates of the main political parties for 2023 election today presented their agenda at the ongoing annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Lagos.
At the event tagged "Bold transition", the candidates spoke at a plenary of the conference subtitled "democratic transitions in 21st century Nigeria: 2023 and beyond"
The presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Abubakar Atiku harped on restructuring.
He disclosed that he has set up a committee to draft an amendment to Nigeria’s constitution aimed at correcting the issues of structural deformities in the country.
The former vice president lamented that the country is affected by disunity and low educational development. He stated that his administration will revive education using the various federating units.
On his part, Mr Peter Obi the presidential candidate of Labour Party declared that the country needs urgent transition from the daunting problems of corruption and insecurity.
He pledged that his administration will ensure that the country becomes safe and corrupt free for development.
The former Anambra state governor decried the disunity facing the country, he stated that the 2023 election will not be based on tribal or religious sentiments, but on character and competence.
Former Borno state governor, vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Kassim Shettima who represented the presidential candidate Mr Bola Tinubu, said that their skills, capacity and past achievements in Borno and Lagos states will be replicated around the country to lead it out of its present challenges.
The keynote speaker, award-winning author Chimamanda Adichie in her presentation stated that Nigeria is in need of heroes who have the capacity to take bold decisions to save it from disarray and hardship
She said that a bold transition must embrace audacity, innovation, self awareness and self criticism
"We cannot avoid self-criticism but criticise the government. We cannot hide our own institutional failure while demanding transparency from the government.” she said.
Stressing on the need for an uncorrupted judicial system, she tasked the judiciary to leverage on technology for efficient discharge of judicial processes and the administration of justice in the country.
