The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, has said that the 9th National Assembly will strive to pass the Electoral Offences bill before its completion of tenure.
He disclosed this on Tuesday in his message at the resumption of plenary after the two - week break for governorship and states' houses of assembly elections.
He said that the house will brace up action on the bill because it is necessary to ensure effective enforcement against individuals and organisations whose violation of electoral laws undermines the constitution and threatens democracy
He explained that the bill has the potential to create a system of vigorous prosecution and punishment of electoral offenders, will serve as a deterrent to others in the future and help build confidence in elections.
He stated that an objective analysis of the just concluded elections shows that there have been improvements especially with the introduction of technology.
The speaker who commended the roles of all the key players in the duties of the house of representatives advised the Independent National Electoral Commission to collaborate with stakeholders to conduct a meticulous assessment of election processes for reforms and improvements.
He further stated that the house need to understand and put in more effort towards ensuring improved political empowerment and representation for women and other marginalized groups.
