The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) thursday in Abuja organized a Climate Change Media Summit: Road to Cop27.
The physical and virtual gathering drew the attention of several media practitioners and development experts across anglophone Africa.
It featured launch of three research papers on important aspects of climate change: Feasibility of nationally determined contributions of climate change in West Africa, Gender Impact of Climate change in Nigeria and Ghana, the Impact of Russia Ukraine Crisis on Energy Transition and Africa's focus for Cop27.
It also had panel sessions and launch of a documentary on the Impact of flooding in affected communities.
Crisis on Energy Transition, The role of stakeholders in Environmental Disaster and Flooding in Nigeria and Leveraging Effective Partnerships for Adaptation Financing in Africa towards Cop27 and different challenges facing the Africa nations with regards to Climate change were deliberated upon and recommendations made.
Nigeria currently experienced severe flooding, an effect of climate change that destroyed many lives, properties and displaced thousands of people in various states across the country.
The experts said that understanding climate change is a necessity in the country in this age when there is a dire need to beef up efforts working towards adaptation and mitigation saying that the media owns a responsibility as information stakeholder to increase awareness, especially in rural regions.
The first Climate Change Media Summit is a lead up to the COP27 where leaders, experts and other participants from countries across the world will be convening in Egypt for the 27th Conference of the Parties, COP27, on climate change.
